Back in the '70's, I made the momentous move from the East Coast to the West and quickly discovered that much of my garden knowledge needed an update. Seattle's climate was unlike anything I had experienced in Massachusetts or Ohio or Colorado, and many of my favorite vegetables simply didn't grow well. A friend steered me to a new seed company, a tiny business called Territorial Seed, unique in that, rather than trying to tout its wares all over the country, it would only sell to people living west of the Cascade Mountains. Every vegetable and cover crop listed had been carefully tested and selected by Steve Solomon for its performance in the maritime Northwest.

I have been struggling with the notion for years as to this whole idea of how to grow a garden without harsh chemicals. I always thought I was there when I heaped up my leaves to dry every fall. After reading this book I now understand that there is a lot more to it than I had realized. Even though I do have a background in science, one does not need one to understand this book. As with all of Steve's books it is well written and has an extensive bibliography to back up his premises. For those so inclined, it also has some history about composting. The book is replete with the scientific underpinnings as well as very detailed charts and the extensive practical description of how to do it. I found the book so interesting I could not put it down. If you want to know the history, science behind composting, and extensive how to do it information this book is for you.

The content and writing stlye for this book are great. What I can't stand is the horrible formatting in the version. Several instances of words being connected together without spaces in between, tables being completely unformatted, and just plain weird paragraph formatting make this a terrible book for the . I'm highly disappointed with the version. Buyer beware.
I got this because it was free, and I'm an avid gardener, and I'm familiar with Steve Solomon.

But I did not think anyone could have an entire book's worth of stuff to say about compost.

I was VERY surprised how much I learned in spite of having had compost piles for over a decade.

I think this is a useful read for any gardener.
Best free source of info on composting. Some of it older, but all of it useful.
A lot of good information in this book. The table of contents only says "Chapter 1, Chapter 2..." without any info. The end of the book gets a little "preachy" and I'm losing interest really fast. I'll stick with it just in case.
I'm a big fan of Steve Solomon's writing styel and the information and experience he conveys. this book is no exception and it does a great job of building upon the information on composting that is in "gardening when it counts", which I highly recommend.

The problem with this copy is that it makes multiple references on many pages to figurs and charts that are not printed. It seems the book was designed for viewing on a computer and not everything made it into the paper edition. This problem does not mean the book has no value, but does reduce the value significantly. I still recommend reading it, but would also advise that you find a software edition if possible with the graphics intact.
I love Steve Solomon's books and had to get this one. His explanations and clear explanations provide all of the detail I need to understand and make use of the ideas and principles he's telling us about.

This book has provided me with enough details on soil nutrient processes and how vegetables interact with the soil organisms for me to understand my soil(s) enough to ask the right questions about how to improve my vegetable garden, as well as decide on approaches that might have a chance of being effective without spending a lot of money or taking a chance on an approach that might produce unusable soil. I was especially impressed with the discussion on the current understanding of the both compost and organic fertilizers (though his comments are not limited to organic fertilizers).

I would definitely be giving the book a 5 star rating if the publisher had taken a little pain to reproduce the very interesting tables and figures. My guess is that editing the tables could have been done in an hour or two at the most, and the figures in far less time. A pity it wasn't done.
The information presented is excellent and reasonably well-organized. I think those who have taken courses in ecology, or read a lot of books about gardening and soil, will find the at times densely-packed information easier to unpack. That said, the explanations are accessible enough that anyone interested enough in composting to get an entire book on the subject will learn a good deal of useful principles. The author's approach to educating the reader in a way that (in his words) does not insult our intelligence, but rather gives a foundation of knowledge and theory mixed with practical advice, definitely makes me feel confident about composting for recycling and organic gardening. Methods and materials are covered in a good amount of detail. Worm composting is included. The overview does not hone in on any particular region, but provides enough information to adapt your methods to your local climate.

The publication itself seems a bit like a manuscript. There's practically no white space, text formatting is not consistent, and information that's supposed to be presented in tables is in uneven columns. There are no figures or illustrations, even when referenced by the author. If you want an easy reference volume, you're going to have to break out the highlighters or post-its to make the 93-page wall of text easier to navigate (there are chapters, but they don't have titles; there are headings, but they're not bolded or printed larger or double-spaced).
