As is the case with most of Block's writing, this book is interesting and well crafted. It is also a rehash of past work, as was his previous Liar's title. I enjoyed reading the book but I don't feel it stretched me any as an intermediate writer. I have been a fan of Block since he created Matt Scudder. His style draws you into his work. If you are looking for something interesting and well written to fill in your empty time, this book is a good choice. As a tool for your writer's toolbox, I do not recommend it.Product details

The Liar Bible A Handbook for Fiction Writers (Audible Audio Edition) Lawrence Block Robert Sams Audible Studios Books Reviews
While this isn't a one-stop shop like Telling Lies for Fun & Profit, this was a very enjoyable read that touches on several topics not mentioned in Lies. Mr. Block is always a joy to read and this is no exception.
Helpful without being preachy and I was amazed that the author held my attention. Each article seemed timeless and led to a greater appreciation of those who are artful practitioners of the writer's craft.
While I did find many sections of this book to be a bit dated, (What book about writing isn't these days after more than a year?) the book as a whole is invaluable as both a resource and as entertainment. Mr. Block is a master at his craft and I learned much from reading this. If you're a writer, do yourself a favor and get a copy of this book. You won't regret it.
Any wannabe writer should read Lawrence Block's collection of writing tips, culled from his old magazine column on the subject. A well-published author, Block is known for his mysteries. So this advice comes from the Hard Knock University of Experience. A great reminder for professional writers too!
I own Block's other two writing guides and love them, so I was thrilled to discover this one for my . Block's informal, sometimes self-deprecating style is entertaining, but you also learn a great deal about developing plots, characters and and themes. He doesn't subscribe to formulas - he just talks about ways you might want to spark your own imagination and see those ideas through in your own way.
Before snatching up The Liar's Bible at the bargain price of $2.99 (even less in Oz due to the exchange rate) I'd set all the advice books aside, keeping only a copy of Stephen King's On Writing and Strunk and White's book on style.
On the strength of this book I'll buy all the others in Lawrence Block's considerable catalogue. The thing about these columns/essays, originally written for Writer's Digest, is that they answered a lot of questions that I hadn't yet thought to ask. I particularly liked the column about handling money as a writer and Mr. Block's warning against upping one's financial commitments and status objects (bigger house, better car) every time a payday comes around, in order to save precious writing time into the future.
He's a wise man and generous with his wisdom and experience--I feel almost guilty squirreling it away in my library for only three bucks--and I think you'll find that each essay in The Liar's Bible is not only an easy, enjoyable read but will also uncover something you didn't know you needed to know.
This book is a collection of columns that Mr Block wrote for Writer's Digest in the 80's for the most part. They are highly literate and thoughtful essays on the craft and art of writing, coupled with penetrating explorations of what writing and storytelling is all about.
I have many of the columns that are published in this book but they consist of very yellow, very fragile, tear-outs from the original magazine and I am very glad to now have them in a more permanent and organized form.
Three dollars is an extraordinary bargain for the book but its contents are ultra fine gold.
