I enjoyed this celebratory 900th edition of Action Comics, but found the main story difficult to follow without having read the preceding comics in the story arc.I also found the short story about Superman deciding to give up his American citizenship a cop-out.
Superman doesn't have a passport in the name of his superhero identity, his alter-ego Clark Kent does.
Superman doesn't go through international customs like every other American, Clark Kent does.
Superman does not file a flight plan before trespassing through foreign air or sea space.
In short, Superman does not appear to respect the sovereignty of the world's community of nations. Clark Kent does, but Clark Kent is not the one renouncing his American citizenship, Superman is.
Even if Clark Kent was the one renouncing his American citizenship, by virtue of his marriage to Lois Lane, who isn't renouncing her American citizenship, Superman isn't really giving up anything.
He and DC are making a moot point at the expense of thousands of dedicated Americans that sacrificed their lives and well-being to serve their country. That's what this reader took away from a powerful, but misguided story in an otherwise great comic book celebrating the world's first American comic book superhero.
